So, there's this guy Charlie befriended a while back, after she saw him fall from the stars and he dropped her from a great height and called her a villain. It's been an interesting relationship, at the very least, but the last time she saw him, he took her to see the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The firestarter can't quite top that, but she can do something sickeningly normal and pack a picnic basket with sandwiches, chips and soda, and then drive over to his house. Out of courtesy, Charlie settles on the Bug's trunk and waits until Clark makes an appearance.

"Up for a picnic?" Subtlety is for other people.

They've found me. I don't how, but I can feel them closing in. Leaving everything but what I can fit into a pack. Fuck, why did it have to be now, after so long?

I've given Charlie something of a reboot after re-reading the novel. She's been aged several years to allow her some time to heal between her last successful escape from the Shop, and the present time. This way, the poor firebug isn't quite as neurotic, though she still does have issues to work through.

It's a cold shower.

More than cold - frigid. The loss of temperature only achieved when someone lets the water run for five minutes without turning up the heat. Charlie sits at the bottom of the tub, knees tucked against her chest and arms wrapped around her legs.

She killed someone today.

Killing is wrong. Killers must be punished. So Charlie makes herself stay underneath the water far longer than necessary, shivering uncontrollably after another few minutes. She's going to make herself sick if this continues, and something in the back of her mind wonders if that's not with the teenager is aiming for.

Except that sick means hospital means being captured again.

The water shuts off a moment later, and Charlie slowly unwinds from her crouch, wincing at the pains-and-needles effect going through her legs. Another form of penance maybe. After drying off, she pulls on panties, shirt and sweatpants, ignoring her shoes for the moment, and curls up on the motel bed.

She killed someone today, and killers are punished.

But she's already in hell.

[ Fanueil Hall, Boston; 6pm ]

She's nervous, tucked into a group of tourists milling about near the corner of the square with the stupid cow statues. They call it art, but Charlie thinks it looks like a bunch of adults tried too hard to get in touch with their inner child. She's got a good view of the area, and keeping a sharp eye out for anyone that looks too official, though her danger sense has only ever not worked once, regular policemen, and a superhero in a flashy red car.
